The 5-day Sirimon – Chogoria Route offers a more scenic trek compared to the Naro Moru route. It traverses the dry side of Mount Kenya National Park, providing some of the most breathtaking walking experiences. The journey takes you through forests, ascending to a wide ridge approach towards the summit area. Starting on the northwest side near Nanyuki at Sirimon Park Gate, this climbing route provides adequate access, and the bunkhouse facilities are the best on this side of the mountain.
After leaving Nairobi at 7.30 am, we travel to Nanyuki town for lunch, taking approximately 4 hours. From there, we proceed to Sirimon Gate (Sirimon Park Gate), which takes about 1 hour at 2440m. We follow the track uphill through the forest, transitioning to heathland after about 3 hours. After approximately 3.5 hours from the gate, the track leads to Judmaier Camp at 3300m, where we have dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, we follow the track uphill, taking the left fork at the junction. About one hour from Old Moses Camp, the track crosses the Ontulili River, and we continue contouring through the Moorland, crossing Liki North. The route leads uphill to Mackinders Valley, offering panoramic views of the main peaks (Nelion, Batian, and Lenana). We have dinner and spend the night at Shipton Camp (4200m).
This day is dedicated to acclimatization with guided hikes. You'll have the opportunity to trek to Kami Hut and down to Hauseberg Lakes (Hauseberg Tarn and Nanyuki Tarn). After the hikes, we return to Shipton for an early dinner and overnight stay in preparation for the summit attempt.
Early in the morning, at around 3 a.m., we begin the ascent up a steep stony quarry that cuts through a cliff, offering breathtaking views. After about 3 hours, we reach Mount Kenya Point Lenana (6 km from Shipton Camp) around 6:30 am. From there, we continue to Lenana Peak at 4985m, taking about 3 hours. After enjoying the stunning views and sunrise, we descend to Mintos Hut (6 km, 2 hours) for breakfast. The adventure hiking continues for 20 km (4-5 hours) further down to Mount Meru Bandas (2950m), where we have dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, we trek for 2 hours covering 15 km until we reach the forest clearance. From there, a 4x4WD vehicle takes us the remaining distance of approximately 16 km. We catch a transfer vehicle to Chogoria Village, where we connect with our transfer vehicle back to Nairobi.
I enjoyed the tour and would recommend it to my friends.
